One Below opens at Ladysmith

Bargain hunters are expected to flock to an Ashton shopping centre this weekend as it welcomes the arrival of a new £1 or less store.

One Below, a new UK discount brand from the original founders of Poundworld Retail, opened its doors on Friday at Ladysmith Shopping Centre, where people could be seen queuing ahead of the 10am opening.

The store has recruited 20 members of staff from the local area to become part of the One Below team, which includes many of the former staff who lost their jobs when the old Ashton Poundworld shop went in to administration in 2018.

The new independent chain is the first discount store in the UK to sell everything for £1 and under including a wide range of brands such as Coca Cola, Pedigree, Heinz, Kellogg’s and Cadbury’s and many popular cleaning names such as Zoflora and The Pink Stuff, as favoured by social media superstar Mrs Hinch.

Samantha Robinson, assistant centre manager at Ladysmith, said: “Everyone is excited to welcome One Below to Ladysmith. “Such retailers have been the saviour for many high streets, with one of their many advantages being that they face very little competition from the internet.

"Having the former Poundworld unit open and trading again will provide a boost for the town centre in terms of both retail offer and footfall as consumers are increasingly seeking value for money.

“I am confident One Below will become a key brand in the centre and I wish the new team every success.”

One Below will sell over 5,000 products, retailing at £1 or less with prices starting at as little as 29p. The store will stock a wide range of items across 10 departments including groceries, home, health and beauty, baby care, toy, DIY, partyware, craft and gardening.

The new brand is being independently financed and launched by father and son retail entrepreneurs, Christopher Edwards (36) and Christopher Edwards Senior. The successful businessmen from Wakefield, were the original founders of former high street retailer, Poundworld Retail Limited before it was sold to American private equity conglomerate, TPG Capital in 2014.

In March One Below also launched stores in Middleton and Manchester Fort Shopping Park. The new brand plans to open at least 10 stores in the North West this year creating 200 jobs for the retail industry in the region. One Below plans to take its new brand national, opening 50 stores this year alone. The company will create 1000 jobs for the struggling UK retail industry, reviving empty retail units on high streets throughout the country.

Christopher Edwards (36) managing director of One Below Retail Limited said: “We’re thrilled to be opening a new store in Ashton. “We’re also pleased to be able to employ many of the former Poundworld staff, who were some of the 6,000 employees to have lost their jobs when the new owners of the business, TPG Capital, sent Poundworld in to administration in 2018.

“One Below will be the only name on the high street offering everything it sells for £1 or less, with branded, quality products costing as little as 29p.

“We look forward to helping local shoppers to save on a variety of their favourite products.”
